How to Cancel Your Mailchimp Subscription
A clear guide to cancelling your Mailchimp paid plan or closing your account entirely - what happens to your contacts and campaign history, and why downgrading to free is often better than closing the account.
Before You Cancel Mailchimp
Three things to check before you start the Mailchimp cancellation process.
- Export your audience data before cancelling. Go to Audience then All Contacts then Export Audience to download your subscriber list as a CSV. If you close your account, this data will be permanently deleted.
- Decide whether to downgrade to free or close entirely. Mailchimp offers a free plan for up to 500 contacts and 1,000 sends per month. Downgrading to free preserves your data. Closing your account permanently deletes everything.
- Check your current billing date. Cancel before the renewal date to avoid being charged for the next period. Mailchimp charges at the start of each monthly billing cycle.
How to Cancel Mailchimp - Step by Step
These steps apply to all Mailchimp paid plans (Essentials, Standard, and Premium). You can either downgrade to the free plan or close your account entirely - both options are covered below.
-
1
Sign in to mailchimp.com
Go to mailchimp.com and sign in with your account credentials.
-
2
Click your profile name and go to Account and billing
Click your account name or avatar in the bottom-left corner, then select "Account and billing" from the menu.
-
3
Open the Billing section
Click "Billing" in the top navigation of the Account page. This shows your current plan, contact count, and next billing date.
-
4
Choose to downgrade or cancel
Click "Change plan" to move to the free plan (if you are within the free plan contact limits), or scroll down to find "Close my account" if you want to permanently delete your account and data.
-
5
Confirm your choice
For a downgrade, confirm the plan change and your paid features will stop at the end of the current period. For account closure, Mailchimp will ask for confirmation and then permanently delete all your data.
What About Your Other Subscriptions?
Cancelling Mailchimp is a good moment to review your full SaaS stack. Most teams discover 2-4 subscriptions they had forgotten about once they do a proper audit. CostLoop is a free subscription tracker that gives you one dashboard for every tool you pay for - renewal dates, costs, owners, and cancellation links all in one place. Free plan tracks up to 5 subscriptions, no credit card required.

What happens to my Mailchimp contacts if I cancel?
If you downgrade to the free plan, your contacts are preserved and accessible. If your contact list exceeds 500 (the free plan limit), you will need to archive or delete contacts before the downgrade takes effect. If you close your Mailchimp account entirely, all contact data is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
Does Mailchimp offer refunds when you cancel?
Mailchimp does not offer prorated refunds on monthly plans. Since Mailchimp bills at the start of each monthly period, cancelling mid-month means you have already paid for that month. The subscription simply does not renew the following month. There are no annual plan refunds either - contact support if you believe you were charged incorrectly.
What does the Mailchimp free plan include?
The Mailchimp free plan includes up to 500 contacts, 1,000 email sends per month, a single-step automation, basic email templates, and a landing page builder. It does not include advanced segmentation, A/B testing, send time optimization, or the Mailchimp phone and chat support available on paid plans.
Can I pause my Mailchimp plan instead of cancelling?
Mailchimp does not have a formal pause feature for paid plans. Your options are to downgrade to the free plan (which has lower send limits and fewer features but keeps your data), or cancel entirely. If you need to temporarily stop sending, downgrading to free is the better option as it preserves your audience data and campaign history.
